To the Left, To the Left

So back in high school and college, Verizon's Ringback tones were all the rage. Do you remember them? When you called someone, instead of hearing the ringtone in your ear while waiting for them to pick up, you got to listen to whatever song that person chose. The song I chose for three, yes three, years, starting in my senior year of high school, was Lovefool by The Cardigans:

What? I was cool. I love love loved that song. Then, after I'd had enough of that song, I moved onto some T-Swift. First, Hey Stephen:

Then, Last Christmas, because it was Christmastime, duh.

My last song was Smile by Uncle Kracker in my senior year of college.

My Mom got into these Ringback tones too. She had Maroon 5 for awhile, but then one day in my freshman year of college I called her and was horrified to hear "To the left, to the left.."

Yup, Beyonce's Irreplaceable. Mom answered and I was like "Mom! What the heck?! Why do you have that song as your Ringback tone? People are going to think you're having a midlife crisis and are leaving Dad!" Mom was offended and answered "I love Beyonce! She's a strong independent woman who isn't taking anyone's crap anymore!" Well, okay then :-)

  1. haha! ring tones...hilarious.

i remember i got this really snazzy phone but my provider blocked the ability to put custom ringtones on your phone because they wanted you to buy them (UM, NO) so i hacked into that shit and when i did, i nearly cried with happiness because i could finally put my beloved SMB theme (the ringtone that has been assigned to my husband since we met in 99) and the 24 CTU ringtone so i can look like a badass when my phone rang and i could pretend to be jack bauer.

  4. Hahahaha, this is so funny! The other day TJ and I were talking about how much thought people used to put into picking a song for their ringtone and how we kind of wish it was still a cool thing to do. Also, I still really love "Lovefool".

  7. Oh the days... I had part of a Sublime song. A dirty part. My boyfriend at the time was a software engineer (beginning to think I have a type...) and he figured out how to cut and install our own ringtones. We felt like the coolest kids at the lunch table.

  10. I never had a ringback tone (of my free choosing) but for about 6 months Verizon somehow decided on some weird tune for my ringback out of the blue and every time my mom called me she would leave me a screaming voice mail "WHY on earth did you put that music on there."

Oh and Verizon kept insisting I didn't have one. GREAT times.

  14. Your mom is so right! And I never had a ringback tone. Choosing a song for a ringtone was hard enough. Not gonna lie, I am kind of glad that trend is over because some people's awful choices would get stuck in my head for days!
